Photo-Cell Replacement

Our neighbor Dan Gill reports:

I found the replacement photo cell at Lowes--$9.98 plus tax. They have 3-4 different kinds/sizes. I took the old one out of the post and bought one most similar in size to it. Anyone who can find the correct circuit breaker, track the wire connections and twist wire nuts can make this repair.

Here are the steps:

  1. Find circuit breaker and turn off power to yard lamp.
  2. Unscrew the lamp portion from the lamp pole--3 screws with hexagon heads. The type where the heads fit in the driver, not slotted or phillips screws.
  3. Note how the red, black and white wires of the old photo cell are connected to the wiring in the post. The new photo cell will also have red, black and white wires for connection.
  4. Take apart and take old photo cell to Lowes/Home Depot to find replacement.
  5. Install new part, put lamp back on pole, turn power back on. Cover photo cell with dark tape to test during daylight hours (it takes a couple of minutes before the lights will come on.) If successful, remove tape and marvel at your accomplishment. If not, consult Yellow Pages for electrician.

The toughest part might be for someone having a light that does not light--it could be difficult to find the circuit breaker unless you really know what you're doing.
